The Beginnings (1830s-1900s)
Sussex, Wisconsin home to a top Fortune 600 company, the 12th-ranked high school district in the state, and 11,597 Wisconsinites. The town is piled with accolades, but this didn’t all happen overnight, or even 100 years. Today we are going to be taking a look at Sussex and it’s road to what it has became today.
In the 1830s, European travelers came over to South Eastern Wisconsin to seek well-nurtured farming lands and agriculture opportunities. These European travelers mainly consisted of German and Irish immigrants. They would be the starting point of what is Susses, Wisconsin. Continuing, in 1850, the first establishment was built by Joseph Wood. He built a wooden hut that he would soon call his home. He spent his days farming the rich, untapped, fertile soil that was Sussex. Other settlers soon began to follow suit. Then 2 years later, the first-ever post office was established. This helped put Sussex on the map for other settlers and companies. In the 1860’s a new railroad line was built perpendicular to what we now know as Main Street by The Thirsty Duck. The stop that was then built helped the rail line connect Milwaukee and Mississippi. This helped build Sussex’s economy by trading with other settlements. A station was then built that featured a hotel and bar for new people traveling on the line, this would turn out to be where Belfast is. With the new station, going into the late 1800s, people began dairy farming which then showed new cheese factories being made in return. This would only help the economic spike of Sussex in the 1800s. Lastly in the 1800s, the town officially gained a government infrastructure helping build notoriety to the growing village.

The Middle Stages (1900s-2000s)
The beginning of the 1900s brought more residents and economic growth to the small town. The introduction of schools, blacksmiths, general stores, and mills help the prosperity of the small town. We then enter the 1930s-1950s when America saw the Great Depression and the deadliest war, WWII. Local factories and farms saw major downturns, but the town came together and helped support one another during these hard times. Then from the 1950s-1970s, urbanization started to be quicker and brought new shopping centers and infrastructures along with it. This would cause thousands of people to flee from the cities and live out in the suburbs.
Modern Day Era (2000s-Present Day)
Then in the early 2000s growth was still rapidly growing for the small town. The town was still attracting new companies and residents to move into it. The town focuses on road upgrades to support the growing population and more community parks to please residents. This now brings us to present-day Sussex. The town is still growing industrially, but seeing a spike in urbanization. New neighborhoods are being built all around Sussex in the Lannon, Falls, and Pewaukee areas. This has shown greater influence in Sussex to construct more housing units like Mammoth Spring right off Main Street and Waukesha Avenue in downtown Sussex. Though it is a lot bigger than it once was, the small town is still loved by thousands of residents.
